Houston Astros ace Justin Verlander notched a major milestone on Saturday when he collected his 3,000th strikeout, also his 300th of the 2019 regular season.
Verlander, 36, became the 18th major league pitcher with 3,000 career strikeouts and the 19th in the modern era (since 1900) to record 300 strikeouts in a season. He notched number 3,000 in the fourth inning with his strikeout of Los Angeles Angers’ Kole Calhoun, who was able to reach first on a wild pitch.
Interestingly enough, it’s the first time a pitcher has recorded his 3,000th strikeout on a wild pitch, according to stats from Baseball-Reference.
Angels’ Andrelton Simmons smacked a two-run homer to give the Angels a 3-0 lead following the wild pitch.
Verlander finished his outing with 12 strikeouts in six innings and gave up three runs, four hits and no walks, improving his record to 21-6 as the Astros beat the Angels 6-3.
“Three thousand was something I wanted to accomplish this season. I honestly wrote off 300,” Verlander said (h/t ESPN). “I thought it was going to be a lot to ask for since these guys don’t strike out much. I got 3,000, and then to look up after five innings and have 11 strikeouts. Talking to AJ [Hinch, Houston’s manager], I knew we were only going to go six innings. I had more emotion for 300 than 3,000 because I didn’t expect to get there in this game. Very thankful to get both accomplishments. It hasn’t set in yet.”
“It was a big night for Justin and a great night for our team,” Angels manager AJ Hinch said.
