Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James is often compared to legendary icon Michael Jordan, but he believes that his skillset would have worked perfectly had he been able to play alongside Jordan during the legendary runs of the Chicago Bulls.
“Me personally, the way I play the game, team first,I feel like my best assets work perfectly with Mike,” James said during a video post on Uninterrupted’s YouTube channel. “Mike is an assassin. When it comes to playing the game of basketball, scoring the way he scored the ball, my ability to pass, my ability to read the game plays, and plays and plays in advance.”
James, 35, said that he felt invigorated by watching the ESPN documentary “The Last Dance” during quarantine and says that he had thought about how playing point forward alongside Jordan would have played out.
“I saw the things [Bulls forward Scottie Pippen] was able to do with Mike. I just think it would’ve been a whole nother level,” James said.
“Pip (Pippen) was one of my favorite players. It would’ve been a whole ‘nother level with me being a point forward, with me being that point forward alongside of him during those Chicago runs.”
James and Jordan did cross paths and play on the court with one another in a pick up game back in 2001, when James was 16 and when Jordan was preparing to make his final comeback in the NBA, when he would go on to play with the Washington Wizards for two seasons before retiring for good.
“The dude looked like Jesus Christ to me. He was black Jesus to me,” James said.
Jordan and James did not play on the same team during that pick up game, however a few years later he was able to play on Jordan’s side when James was invited to take part in Jordan’s annual summer camp at UC Santa Barbara.
“We used to play around 9 p.m. The camp would end and we would stay along with the college kids that he would invite,” James said of the experience. “We would get a good-ass run in for about an hour, an hour fifteen. I was on the same team with MJ, and we didn’t lose a game.”
During the documentary, Jordan’s harsh treatment and demanding expectations of his teammates were often on display, but James says he would have welcomed that.
“I love when a teammate comes to me and challenges me,” James said. “When I was in Miami, D [Heat legend Dwyane Wade] used to come to me and be like, ‘All right, [No.] 6, let’s go.’ [Former Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Tyronn] Lue used to challenge me a lot when I was in Cleveland. He was like, ‘All right, Bron, what you waiting on?’ I see that from Mike, and I feel like our games were a perfect correlation to be successful.
