Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones is dashing any rumors that suggest that head coach Mike McCarthy’s job may be at stake depending on how well the Cowboys fare in the playoffs.
Jones made an appearance on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas on Tuesday and was asked if the Cowboys were to lose their Wild Card Playoff game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, slated for Monday Night Football, would it effect McCarthy’s job.
“No. I don’t even want to … No. That’s it,” Jones said, according to ESPN’s Todd Archer. “I don’t need to go into all the pluses or minuses. I’ve got a lot more to evaluate Mike McCarthy on than this playoff game.”
Chan Gailey was the Cowboys head coach to bring the team to the playoffs in back-to-back seasons back in 1998 and 1999. Gailey was fired following a 27-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in the wild card round, putting an end to his two year run.
Jones has since called the decision to fire Gailey so quickly a mistake.
“I can’t tell you how much confidence I’ve got in Mike and our coaching staff of being on top of where we are with this team right now,” Jones said. “They’ve got every nuance. They understand every frailty that we might have or we might have shown Sunday [in the loss to Washington]. They’ve got everything in their grasp and in their understanding, and I have complete confidence in this coaching staff. It’s outstanding. We’ve got a great chance to go down there and have success.”
Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady is 7-0 all-time against the Cowboys, which has been a talking point heading into the game.
“When you really think about it, we’re not playing Brady,” Jones said. “We’re playing Tampa Bay, the team. And it’s conceivable that we could make Brady not play well and get our tails beat by the rest of the team. And I’m not trying to be cute. But we’ve got to go play the entire team. And this Brady thing has got to be sensitive. I know it’s there and I respect that. Gives us a challenge to do something we haven’t done before, and that’s beat Tom Brady.”
