Villanova freshman Cam Whitmore made quite the debut after only touching the basketball a few times over the last several weeks due to a broken thumb, using both his size and physicality to lead the Wildcats to a 70-66 victory over Oklahoma on Saturday.
Whitmore, a 6-foot-7, 232-pound forward, showcased the skills that made him one of the top recruits out of high school, scoring 22 points in his debut.
“Honestly, I’m shocked,” Villanova head coach Kyle Neptune said (h/t ESPN). “Normal human beings, they would have been just completely discombobulated.”
“I’ve been itching [to go] since the day I got hurt,” Whitmore said.
“That was love from Nova Nation,” Whitmore said of the crowd ovation. “Since the beginning, they’ve been building me up.”
