Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the consensus favorite to win the 2020 NFL MVP award, a 4-1 favorite to win his second MVP award via Caesers Sportsbook, according to ESPN’s David Purdum.
Following Mahomes is the 2019 NFL MVP, Baltimore Ravens’ quarterback Lamar Jackson (13-2). Next on the list is Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback Dak Prescott (9-1), and then Seattle Seahawks signal caller Russell Wilson (12-1).
“This is a very, very hard award for someone who doesn’t play quarterback or running back to win,” Jeff Davis, director of risk for Caesars Sportsbook, said of the projections. “If a receiver has a big year, it’s generally given to the quarterback. Given the way the league has turned to a passing, quarterback-centric league, for a running back to win, it would take a Herculean effort.”
Running backs don’t have great odds, as Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey has 40-1 odds to win the award, the shortest odds of any non-quarterback. The last non-quarterback to win the MVP was back in 2012 when Minnesota Vikings’ running back Adrian Peterson won the award.
No wide receiver has ever won MVP, however 42 quarterbacks have, as well as 16 running backs.
