Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has had a roller coaster of a year, from MVP chants and performing at elite level during spurts this season to being sidelined with concussions, Tagovailoa’s future is now uncertain.
One AFC executive shared their thoughts on Tagovailoa, saying that the third-year quarterback is only as good as the talent around him.
“The Dolphins are in a tough spot, because he’s a good player but a lot like Kirk Cousins,” the executive said, according to ESPN’s Elizabeth Marrill and Marcel Louis-Jacques. “If you give him good football players, he’s going to be productive. If you ask him to go win a game and put a team on his back, that’s asking a lot.”
The executive added the risk of tying to Tagovailoa for the long-term: “You can’t tie the money to a player you’re not sure can stay healthy,” the executive said. “If he didn’t have the medical history, maybe you think harder about doing something. The concussion dynamic is harder to figure out since I’m not sure his medical on that.”
The Dolphins are getting set for their wild card playoff tilt with division rival Buffalo Bills this coming Sunday, but it is still unclear it Tagovailoa will be cleared in time to play the critical game, according to Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel.
Over the course of his 13 games, Tagovailoa threw for career highs of 3,548 yards and 25 touchdowns with just eight interceptions this season.
