The Miami Dolphins got their man, reaching an agreement with former Denver Broncos head coach Vic Fangio, who is one of the most respected defensive minds in all of football, to become their defensive coordinator.
Fangio was 19-30 in three seasons as the Broncos’ coach after being hired in 2019, and will reunite with outside linebacker Bradley Chubb, whom he coached in Denver, in his new gig with the Dolphins.
Fangio’s defenses have finished in the top 10 eight times, most recently with the Chicago Bears back in 2018 when they ranked 3rd, and during his tenure as the head coach in Denver, the Broncos finished eighth overall in 2019.
Fangio, 64, has served as a defensive coordinator over 19 seasons, with teams such as the Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans, San Francisco 49ers, and the Bears.
The Dolphins fired defensive coordinator Josh Boyer, a holdover from the Brian Flores regime, earlier this month in a move that was celebrated by fans, after the Dolphins ranked 4th in run defense in 2022, 21st in defensive expected points added, 22nd in sacks per pass attempt, and 24th in points allowed per game and third-down percentage.
It was a marked dropoff from the defense that ranked in the top 10 in takeaways in each of the previous two seasons, as Miami tied for the second fewest in the NFL, with only 14 takeaways as they struggled throughout the season.
