The Philadelphia Phillies have reportedly kept their eyes on free-agent right hander Jake Odorizzi, checking in with his camp regarding the asking price, according to MLB Network insider Jon Heyman.
Odorizzi is reportedly seeking a three-year deal around $15 million per year, and that price tag may be too rich for the Phillies as it would put them well above the $210 million luxury tax threshold.
Injuries essentially wiped out Odorizzi’s 2020 campaign, but he had a strong 2019 season with the Minnesota Twins, pitching to a 3.51 ERA over 159 innings, and clocking a career-high 27.1% strikeout rate.
The Phillies aren’t alone, as the Los Angeles Angels are also interested in Odorizzi, and have a better financial situation to work with that Philadelphia.
