The Cleveland Browns are again setting their sights on signing veteran pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney, whom the team has gone to great recruiting lengths to attempt to land this offseason, but is not going to break the bank.
According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer’s Mary Kay Cabot, while the Browns are interested in former Pro-Bowler, it is far away from being an “obsession” and the team is more interested in a deal that works for both parties, than over-paying just to land Clowney.
“I think ‘obsessed’ is too strong a word,” Cabot said of the team’s approach with Clowney. “I think the Browns would like to sign him if he’s healthy and if the price is right. If he’s fully recovered from his surgically-repaired torn meniscus, he can be a force off the edge for the Browns, both in terms of disrupting the quarterback and stopping the run.”
“If Clowney, who turned 28 in February, checks out medically, I think he’d be a great acquisition, especially on an incentive-laden one-year deal somewhere around $6.5 million,” Cabot said. “The Browns liked him a lot last year and still like him if he’s good to go. He’d complement Myles Garrett well, and would flourish in Joe Woods’ defense.”
Clowney is coming off a down year with the Tennesse Titans where he was limited by injuries. This heavily impacted interest in him, as teams have opted to sign other players rather than paying the price to land Clowney.
