Following a few weeks of chatter, the dust has appeared to have settled and Ben Roethlisberger is expected to be under center as the starting quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers for the 2021 regular season.
Roethlisberger and the Steelers still need to work out the financial end of things, as Roethlisbeger currently comes with a cap-hit of $40 million for the 2021 season, but the veteran quarterback has stated he is willing to work with the team on a new deal to limit that hit.
According to ESPN’s Brooke Pryor, one potential scenario could see the Steelers give Roethlisberger a four-year contract extension, which would void following the 2021 season and thus save the franchise around $14 million in cap space this season.
The Steelers could also give Roethlisberger a massive pay cut to the veteran minimum, which would bring his 2021 cap hit down to around $23 million for next season.
There are a number of different avenues that the Steelers can take, but it appears that all signs are pointing to Roethlisberger holding his starting quarterback status in Pittsburgh for another season.
