The Dallas Cowboys have resumed contract negotiations with franchise quarterback Dak Prescott ahead of the March 9th deadline to issue franchise tags on players, according to NFL.com’s Jane Slater.
Prescott being franchise tag again would leave the Cowboys with a heft $37 million cap charge heading into free agency, a number that will prohibit them from making any big moves on the open market this offseason. Dallas instead would like to hammer out a long-term deal before reaching that point.
While Prescott is not seeking to surpass the $45 million-per-year deal that the Kansas City Chiefs are giving quarterback Patrick Mahomes in a deal he landed last year, but Prescott is looking to approach that valuation, with the contract of Houston Texans superstar signal caller Deshaun Watson being an interesting deal to reference in Prescott’s negotiations.
Prescott, 27, has had his issues with landing a new deal with the Cowboys, and may be in complete control of the negotiations from here on out.
