Carolina Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield received a second opinion that confirmed surgery will not be necessary and the expectation is that Mayfield will not be placed on injured reserve, according to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero.
Mayfield, who has suffered a high ankle sprain that forced him out of Sunday’s game early and had the former number one overall pick donning a walking boot, could miss anywhere from two to six weeks.
With Mayfield out, and backup Sam Darnold also unavailable, the Panthers will turn to P.J. Walker as they embark on the rest of the season following the firing of head coach Matt Rhule, with interim head coach Steve Wilks at the helm.
