Boston Red Sox veteran second baseman Trevor Story was off to a bumpy start to the 2022 season, his first with this Red Sox since signing a multi-year deal during the offseason, but he flipped the switch on it in an epic game to help the Red Sox rally to defeat the Seattle Mariners 12-6 on Thursday night.
Story entered the game batting .205 with 16 RBIs, but did plenty to boost those numbers on Thursday.
Story became the first second baseman in MLB history to steal a base in a three-homer game, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, and tallied 3 homers, 4 hits, 7 RBIs, and a stolen base to join Jim Tabor as the only Red Sox players with 5 runs, 3 dingers and 7 RBIs since RBI became an official stat in 1920.
“The at-bats are getting better,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said (h/t ESPN). “He keeps working hard at it and he’s a good athlete. He will hit. We know that. He’s feeling comfortable in the environment and it’s just a matter of time. Today was outstanding.”
“Just a special night and one I’ll never forget,” Story said following the game. “Just very simple stuff, just trying to be more balanced and be on time,” Story said. “I think that’s about as simple as I can put it. I’m not trying to do too much and I think that works really well for me.”
The game marked the 19th multi-homer game of Story’s career, with his last 3-homer performance since doing so against the San Francisco Giants back in September 2018 while he was a member of the Colorado Rockies.
Story inked a $140 million, six-year contract with Boston in free agency.
