New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso has smashed his way into the record books, setting a record for most home runs in the history of New York’s ballpark, Citi Field, when he took Nate Pearson deep in a loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, padding his lead in the major league home run race.
Alonso’s blast was his 21st of the season and it gave him a two homerun lead over New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge who sits at 19 homers on the season.
Additionally, Alonso passed fellow first baseman Lucas Duda with his 72nd home run at Citi Field. Currently, Michael Conforto is third on the list with 66, and the closest to his number is Mets icon David Wright who had 49 career homers at the park.
In terms of franchise perspective, Alonso’s 167 career home runs rank fifth in Mets history behind sluggers Daryl Strawberry, Wright, Mike Piazza and Howard Johnson.
If Alonso can stay healthy, he should provide a stellar home run duel with Judge as the season rolls on.
