The New York Yankees added yet another valuable player to the injured list when they added DJ LeMahieu on the 10-day injured list due to a sprained left thumb.
LeMahieu, the American League batting leader, will join superstar outfielders Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton on the shelf.
LeMahieu sprained the thumb during an awkward swing in the fourth inning of the Yankees’ victory over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday night.
“It’s just a sprain that’s not broken,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “In some ways, I think a little bit relieved of kind of fearing for the worst last night, but we won’t really have anything definitive probably ’til tomorrow.”
LeMahieu was sent for an MRI and CT scan on Saturday night on the same thumb that he broke a small bone in back in 2018 while he was still with the Colorado Rockies. LeMahieu said he experienced the same feeling in the thumb on Saturday as he did back in 2018, when missed close to a month of action.
In a corresponding move, Miguel Andujar was recalled from the Yankees’ alternate training site in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
