The Chicago Cubs have non-tendered Kyle Schwarber, the 2016 World Series hero that pushed the Cubs to their historic championship, making him a free agent, according to ESPN’s Jesse Rogers.
Additionally, the Cubs tendered a contract to 2016 National League MVP infielder Kris Bryant as well as shortstop Javier Baez and catcher Willson Contreras.
“He wasn’t surprised,” new Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said of Schwarber, 27, per the report. “He was disappointed. Any competitor would be.”
Schwarber hit .230 with 121 home runs in 551 regular-season games with the Cubs.
“We’ll definitely keep the door open,” Hoyer said. “We’ll continue to talk about ways to bring him back. … We had a good conversation. He’s a Cubs legend. No question about that.”
