The Chicago White Sox have officially release veteran catcher Johnathan Lucroy from his minor league contract, according to FanSided’s Robert Murray.
Lucroy, 34, appeared in 14 games for the White Sox during Spring Training but only logged 23 plate appearances during that time, going 6-for-18 with a double, while drawing five walks and only notching one strikeout.
Lucroy seemed to be on track to be the backup backstop for Chicago, but the team is opting to go younger and Lucroy asked for his release after being informed that he would not make the Opening Day roster, according to The Athletic’s James Fegan.
