The New England Patriots will be sticking with Cam Newton as their starting quarterback despite yet another dismal performance in their Week 14 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night.
Newton finished 9-of-16 for 119 yards, including a costly pick-6 interception, as the Patriots offence again struggled to be productive.
Newton was eventually replaced by Jarrett Stidham, who came in with a little over 10 minutes remaining in the game, and the Patriots trailing 24-3.
“Cam’s our quarterback,” Patriots head coach Bill Belichick emphatically said following the game, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss.
“That’s not my call. I’m just doing what I’m asked, with the mentality of getting better, and that’s what I keep planning on doing” Newton, who has been playing through an abdomen injury, said when asked about the Patriots quarterback situation.
New England’s playoff hopes continue to dwindle, and Newton seems like a big reason as to why the Patriots have struggled in 2020, throwing for 2,172 yards to go along with only 5 passing touchdowns versus 10 interceptions.
“We just got to be better, and it starts with me personally,” he said. “Just have to make more plays, and that’s what it comes down to.”
