The Philadelphia 76ers have fired head coach Doc Rivers following their blowout loss in Game 7 to the Boston Celtics, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Rivers led the Sixers to the Eastern Conference Semifinals in each of his three seasons with the team and will now join a deep coaching pool that includes the likes of Monty Williams, Mike Budenholzer, and Nick Nurse.
Rivers’ firing comes on the heels of a report from ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne who reported on Monday that “it would be hard” to see James Harden, who is set to hit free agency, return to Philadelphia if Rivers were still in charge.
The Sixers coaching search will include Budenholzer, Sam Cassell, Mike D’Antoni, Nurse, Frank Vogel and Monty Williams.
Rivers signed a five-year, $40 million with the Sixers back in 2020, coming over following a long tenure with the Los Angeles Clippers.
