The Detroit Pistons have made their decision and will use the first overall pick in tonight’s 2021 NBA Draft to select Oklahoma State’s Cade Cunningham, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Pistons officials traveled to New York to meet with Cunningham on Wednesday before finalizing their decision to make him the top overall pick. Cunningham won the Wayman Tisdale Award as the top freshman in college basketball and led the Big 12 in scoring with 20.1 points per game last season.
Cunningham was the Big 12 Player of the Year and a consensus All-American during his lone freshman season, and provides a dynamic skillset to man the Pistons backcourt for years to come as they attempt a rebuild.
Cunningham ranked in the Top 10 in rebounding, field goal percentage, and free throw percentage, and was stellar during late game situations.
The Pistons finished 20-52 last season.
