The Carolina Panthers have waived quarterback Baker Mayfield and will continue with the rest of their season with Sam Darnold and PJ Walker under center at quarterback, according to ESPN’s David Newton.
Carolina (4-8) is still in contention in the weak NFC South, and the decision to move on from Mayfield was reportedly a mutual agreement between the organization and Mayfield, who asked for his release, and Mayfield would have been inactive if he remained on the roster.
Mayfield will be available on waivers to the other 31 NFL teams and if he goes unclaimed by 4pm EST on Tuesday he will then become an unrestricted free agent.
