Despite rumors that indicate that the San Francisco 49ers may be looking to move on from quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo following the season, head coach Kyle Shanahan fully expects Garoppolo to be the teams’ starting signal caller for the 2021 season.

“I expect Jimmy to be our starter next year,” Shanahan said, according to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner. “I expect him to come and play with us this year. … But to think that we’ve made any decisions on anybody going into the future isn’t the case. Jimmy has won a lot of games for us. It’s a lot harder to win games when he’s not here. Just hoping we can get him back.”

Garoppolo is on a team-friendly pact with the Niners, and is set to earn a non-guaranteed $24.1 million in base salary for next season, meaning if the Niners did move on form Garoppolo, it would only leave them with $2.8 million in dead money.

His deal expires following the 2022 season.
