The NBA Board of Governors passed a stricter package of measures that they hope will enforce compliance with tampering and salary-cap circumvention that has plagued the league the last few years and is a growing problem each passing season.
“Suspending executives … taking away draft picks … voiding contracts … all those provisions are on the table,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said a news conference (h/t ESPN). “The ultimate goal is compliance.”
Silver added that the provisions passed unanimously as the NBA seeks a “culture of compliance.”
“There was a strong view of every single person in the room that we need to ensure that we’re creating a culture of compliance in this league,” Silver said. “Our teams want to know that they’re competing on a level playing field and frankly don’t want to feel disadvantaged if they’re adhering to our existing rules.”
The new measures were part of a number of changes that the board improved, including: new language in the rule book regarding traveling violations, and teams having to submit starting lineups 30 minutes prior to tipoff, instead of 10 minutes (barring injury exceptions), among others.
