2021 wasn’t the season that All-Star infielder DJ LeMahieu and the New York Yankees expected, especially following LeMahieu inking a six-year $90 million contract extension last season to keep him in pinstripes.
But, it appears that his down year has some sort of explanation: LeMahieu was dealing with a sports hernia injury, according to the New York Post’s Dan Martin.
“Yankees officials believe DJ LeMahieu’s lackluster 2021 could be traced to a sports hernia that the infielder tried to play through before finally getting surgery after the season, The New York Post’s Dan Martin writes.”
LeMahieu hit .327 and then .364 in his first season-and-a-half with the Yankees, before falling off a clip in production, losing close to 100 points on his batting average thereafter.
