The San Francisco 49ers may need to make a change at quarterback following a brutal 30-18 loss to the Indianapolis Colts that dropped them to 2-4 on the season, and one that only made the chatter about Trey Lance taking over as the team’s starting quarterback that much louder.
Following the game, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked is Jimmy Garoppolo would be the team’s starting quarterback as they take on the Chicago Bears next week, and his response wasn’t that convincing.
“I would guess so,” Shanahan said, according to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner. “I’ll watch this tape and see if guys are healthy, first of all.”
“I have got a whole team to worry about,” Shanahan said. “I’m not just thinking about the quarterback situation right now. I’ll evaluate everything, see where our team’s at, see who gives us the best chance to beat Chicago and see what our options are … But we’ve got a lot of things to figure out.”
Garoppolo finished with 16-of-27 passing for 181 yards with a touchdown, a fumble and two interceptions on Sunday night, but admitted that his injured calf was still bothering him throughout the game, but added that it wasn’t “hindering” him.
“It held up,” Garoppolo said. “Definitely felt it at times. But it sort of is what it is. All the guys out there, we’re all playing with something right now. It’s that point of the season.”
