San Francisco 49ers young signal called Trey Lance has received his fair share of criticism since the 49ers drafted him during the first round of the 2021 draft, but Lance isn’t concerned about what his critics have to say.
Lance will face a battle to unseat veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo as the team’s starter, especially since it was Garoppolo who led the Niners to the NFC Championship game last season, where they ultimately lost to the Los Angeles Rams.
It was expected that the 49ers would trade Garoppolo this offseason, but he remains on the roster, complicating matters for the team moving forward. While Garoppolo is expected to be gone at some point, there are still questions regarding Lance’s status with the team for 2022.
“In the most respectful way possible, it doesn’t change how I feel about you guys as people, but it’s not my job to care what you guys say or anyone else on social media,” Lance said, according to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner. “For me, I care about what the guys in the locker room think and what my coaching staff thinks.”
Lance has been the main quarterback for the Niners during OTAs, and he and the team are hoping that 2022 proves to be a statement season for the young quarterback.
