The Miami Dolphins treasure chest of draft picks, which includes the Houston Texans first and second round picks in the 2021 draft, reportedly factored into the team’s recent decision to bench quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick in favor of rookie Tua Tagovailoa, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
“That’s definitely a part of it,” a source close to the team said, per the report. “Whoever told you that is right.”
The Texans season has been spiraling downwards, and their first round pick could be in the Top 3-5 range, perhaps higher, and could land the Dolphins in a position to have a shot at Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
Other quarterbacks that could be available include Ohio State’s Justin Fields or North Dakota’s Trey Lance.
For now, the team is committed to seeing what Tagovailoa can bring to the table, and if he can stay healthy, and it all starts on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams.
How Tua plays will go a long way in determining what the Dolphins do in the 2021 NFL Draft.
