We are six weeks into the 2021 NFL season, and all five first-round quarterbacks have started at least one game. There has also been a third-round pick that’s started a few games. Let’s take a look at how each rookie has done so far this year.
- Trevor Lawrence, Jacksonville Jaguars: Jacksonville named Lawrence the starter in late August. He got off to a rough start, as he threw seven interceptions in the first three games. The Jaguars also lost their first five games. However, against the Dolphins, Lawrence won his first game as an NFL quarterback. He’s also taking better care of the football, throwing only one interception in the last three games. On the season, he has thrown for 1465 yards, seven touchdowns, and eight interceptions.
- Zach Wilson, New York Jets: Wilson also started week one for the Jets. However, he has had the same struggles as Lawrence early in the year. Weeks two and three, in particular, were rough as he threw six interceptions to zero touchdowns. The Jets sit at 1-4 and are coming off a bye. On the season, Wilson has thrown for 1117 yards, four touchdowns, and nine interceptions.
- Trey Lance, San Francisco 49ers: Lance started as the backup to Jimmy Garoppolo. Against Seattle, he came in after Garoppolo went down with a calf injury. He threw two touchdowns in a losing effect. He started the following week at Arizona but struggled in a loss. He completed 51% of his passes, threw an interception, and injured his knee. Lance has thrown for 354 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception.
- Justin Fields, Chicago Bears: Fields was the backup to Andy Dalton at the start of the season. In week two, Dalton went down with a knee injury and Fields took over in a win against Cincinnati. Fields then started the following week and was named the permanent starter. Fields threw his first touchdown pass in a win at Las Vegas. Throughout the season, Fields has thrown for 632 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions.
- Mac Jones, New England Patriots: Jones was a starter on day one for the Patriots. He may be the best rookie quarterback so far this year. He has had his struggles, though, which includes a three-interception game against New Orleans. However, Jones has completed over 70% of his passes in all but one game this year. He has seven touchdowns, six interceptions with 1472 yards passing yards on the year.
- Davis Mills, Houston Texans: Mills came in for an injured Tyrod Taylor in week two. He’s started every game since but has not been able to get a win. Against the Bills and Colts, he through a combined six interceptions. Mills has had his moments as well, throwing three touchdowns to zero interceptions against the Patriots. Mills has thrown for 912 yards, five touchdowns, and seven interceptions in 2021.
