Following the benching of franchise quarterback Russell Wilson, Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton took aim at NFL journalists and the narrative surrounding the decision for Denver to bench Wilson.
“This idea that he and I don’t have a good relationship comes from people further away from our program” Payton said, according to the Denver Post’s Ryan McFadden. “The further away people are from the program, the more they jump to (conclusions). It is what it is.”
The Broncos snapped a two game losing stream on Sunday by defeating the Los Angeles Chargers, their first since Wilson was benched.
According to a number of report, the Broncos told Wilson that he must remove injury guarantees from his contract if he wanted to remain the starter, which means that the decision to bench Wilson ensures those guarantees never come to pass due to the minimization of the injury risks.
The Broncos are now 8-8 on the season and will head to Las Vegas to take on the Raiders to close out the season and with a shot to notch their first winning record since the 2016 season.
