The New York Jets have fired defensive coordinator Gregg Williams following a controversial blitz call that led to a game winning touchdown against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini.
The blitz with 13 seconds to play, left rookie cornerback Lamar Jackson in man-to-man coverage with Raiders’ rookie speedster Henry Ruggs III who easily burned Jackson en route to a 46-yard, game-winning touchdown in the final seconds of the 4th quarter.
Jets’ veteran safety Marcus Maye, a team captain, openly questioned the play call by Williams following the game.
Williams is the first member of head coach Adam Gase’s staff to be fired. Williams was hired back in January 2019.
