The Dallas Cowboys left free agency checking a lot of boxes off their to-do list, but now they have the difficult task of attempting to replace perhaps the most valuable piece along their offensive line as All-Pro veteran center Travis Frederick has officially announced his retirement, according to ESPN’s Todd Archer.
Frederick, 29, had been contemplating retiring but the decision to do so still came as a surprise to the Cowboys. Frederick formally announced his retirement on his official Twitter page.
Frederick pointed to his battle with Guillain-Barré syndrome, an autoimmune disease that affects the nervous system, that cost him the entire 2018 season. During his battle with the disease, Frederick lost strength and some motor skills, but he was officially cleared to return in 2019.
Frederick not only returned to start all 16 games, but he returned to his form and elevated the Cowboys offensive line to among the best in the NFL.
“I made my return to the field, played well overall, and was selected to the Pro Bowl, but it was a difficult year for me,” Frederick said on Twitter. “Each day I faced a struggle: I could no longer perform at my highest level. Playing ‘well’ is not what I expect of myself and is not what my teammates deserve. Because of this, I know my days as a football player are done. I am proud of what I have accomplished in my career, and I walk away with my head held high.”
“Travis Frederick, by the nature of his center position, was the core piece of what I believe to be one of the most talented and skilled NFL offensive lines that has been assembled,” Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said in an official team statement. “His leadership ability, production and intelligence put him at the top level of interior offensive linemen in our league for many years. At the pinnacle of his success, his career on the field was only exceeded by a rare display of courage and determination in overcoming a life-threatening illness and returning to the game — a challenge that could only be completed by a person with rare levels of perseverance and strength.”

With Frederick out of the fold, the Cowboys will initially turn to veteran backup Joe Looney, who they signed to a one-year, $2.4 million deal last week.
