San Francisco 49ers young quarterback Trey Lance was supposed to be fully immersed as the starter for the Niners this season, embarking on what fans are hoping will be an incredible career, but a right ankle injury snuffed out Lance’s season in Week 2.
Lance suffered a major ankle injury back in Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks, and there were some initial hopes that he may be able to suit up for the 49ers at some point this season, perhaps in the playoffs, but that was snuffed out as well.
According to an official team announcement, Lance needed another surgery to “remove hardware” left behind after the initial procedure back in September.
“Due to the location of the fracture, the required hardware placement was close to a tendon in Lance’s ankle. During the rehab process, their close proximity proved to cause irritation in his ankle. After consulting with multiple experts, the decision was made to have the hardware removed to prevent future issues in the ankle.”
The Niners expect Lance to make a full recovery and be available once OTA’s kick off in 2023.
