The San Francisco 49ers were the focus of headlines at this year’s NFL trade deadline as they completed a trade with the Washington Commanders that will see former 2nd overall pick and defensive end Chase Young head to San Francisco, according to ESPN.
As part of the deal, the Commanders will receive a 3rd round draft pick.
The move marks the end of Young’s once promising tenure in Washington, who declined not to pick up his fifth-year option during this past offseason, which would have counted for $17.452 million against the 2024 salary cap and would have been guaranteed money.
Young, who missed the opener with a neck injury, has five sacks in seven games and has also created 16 incompletions and has 14 sacks, 90 tackles and 6 forced fumbles across 34 games over 4 seasons with the Commanders.
Young had a productive rookie season where he collected 7.5 sacks to go along with 4 forced fumbles and 3 fumble recoveries.
However, injuries would mount from there following a slow start in 2021 which saw Young struggle to collect merely 1.5 sacks over his first 9 games of the season. Young would suffer a knee injury which was initially believed to be only a torn ACL but later would reveal issues regarding his patellar tendon.
Washington will now part with a player that they opted to take in a draft ahead of the likes of quarterbacks Tua Tagovailoa and Justin Herbert.
