Phoenix Suns guard Chris Paul arrived to the organization last offseason via a trade from the Oklahoma City Thunder, and it was widely expected that his arrival would help the Suns end a decade long playoff drought.
What the two sides got was much more. Paul has re-established himself as one of the NBA’s top point guards, while the Suns just completed a sweep of the Denver Nuggets to reach the Western Conference Finals for the first time in 11 years.
For Paul, it was about redemption and playing for Suns head coach Monty Williams.
“A couple of years ago they were writing me off” Paul said, during a post game interview with the NBA on TNT. “This ain’t about me. It’s about us.”
“Mont has been through things in his life that a lot of people don’t necessarily come back from” Paul said of Williams, according to ESPN. “The mental stamina, who he is as a person. Basketball aside, he means so much to me and my family. To be on this journey with him, and to see it paying off, is nice and we are a lot alike. We stay locked in.”
Now, Paul and the Suns will have to win four more games, either against the Utah Jazz or the Los Angeles Clippers, to reach the NBA Finals for the first time since 1993.
