San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has had to wait for swelling to go down in his injured right elbow so that he can undergo surgery for the torn ulnar collateral ligament, which was supposed to happen Wednesday in Arlington, Texas.
However, the surgery will be delayed even further after Purdy met met with Dr. Keith Meister on Tuesday, according to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner.
Purdy continues to have inflammation in the elbow, which is why Dr. Meister recommended that Purdy postpone the surgery until it goes down further, with plans to regroup in early March with the hopes of undergoing the surgery at that time.
Purdy and the 49ers are still hoping that he will have what is known as a “surgical UCL repair augmented with an InternalBrace.”
Should the surgery take place in March, there is an expected six-month recovery time which would put Purdy back on the field sometime in late August, which would be the case if Purdy’s elbow doesn’t need a sort of hybrid surgery that would require a partial reconstruction in addition to the repair.
That determination cannot be made until Dr. Meister gets a look at the elbow when Purdy undergoes the surgery.
The Niners will turn to Trey Lance to handle starting quarterback duties as Purdy recovers, and there has been rumors that they may also explore signing a veteran quarterback to back him up, such as Andy Dalton.
